Vintage style interior decoration

The vintage style interior decoration is not just a passing trend, but a way of life that rescues the essence of the past to give meaning and personality to the present. As expert interior designers, we want to share with you everything we know about this decorative style that appeals to those who are looking for more than just beautiful aesthetics: they are looking for history, warmth and authenticity.

What is the vintage style of decoration and why is it still so popular?

Let us start at the beginning. When we talk about vintage decoration styleWe refer to an aesthetic that recovers elements from the past, especially from the mid-twentieth century, to integrate them harmoniously into current spaces. Vintage is not simply "old", but implies a revaluation of the old, the handcrafted and the well-made.

Essential characteristics of vintage style decoration

Pieces with historyFrom an antique mirror to an inherited armchair, each element has a past.
Soft and aged coloursThe colours: powdery shades such as pale pink, mint green or greyish blue predominate.
Restored furnitureThe mix between the used and the renovated is key.
Romantic or nostalgic detailslace, flowers, retro prints or old photographs.

This style suits those who value authenticity, shy away from the impersonal and want their home to speak about them.

Keys to applying vintage style decoration in the home

If we want to apply the vintage style decoration in our spaces, the first thing we must understand is that it is not a question of filling the house with antiques, but rather of combining them judiciously. Below, we show you how to achieve this, room by room.

Vintage style decoration in the living room

The living room is the soul of many homes, which is why it is an ideal place to express our taste for vintage.

Furniture protagonists in vintage style decoration

A tufted sofa, a frosted glass cabinet or a wooden rocking chair can be the centrepiece. It is better to opt for a few pieces of furniture, but with character, than to saturate the space.

Accessories for an authentic vintage decorating style

A record player, an antique radio or a table lamp with a pleated shade are elements that evoke another era. Let's not forget that the charm is in the small details.

Colours and textiles that reinforce vintage-style decoration

Linen curtains, carpets with faded floral patterns and hand-embroidered cushions help to create a warm atmosphere. Pastel shades and cream tones soften the atmosphere and reinforce the sense of serenity.

Vintage style decoration in the kitchen

The kitchen is another space that lends itself perfectly to style. Here are some ideas on how to achieve it.

Retro electrical appliances as part of the vintage style decoration

Nowadays there are fridges, toasters or mixers with vintage design but modern technology. They are perfect for adding a touch without compromising on functionality.

Tableware and open shelves for vintage-style decoration

Cupboards with exposed china, glass jars and jars with old labels evoke the kitchens of yesteryear. You can play with jars of homemade preserves or weathered wooden planks.

Hydraulic or imitation floors in kitchens with vintage decoration style

If you are renovating, you can opt for floors that imitate old hydraulic mosaics. Otherwise, a vinyl carpet can provide the same effect at a lower cost.

Bedrooms with vintage style decoration and warmth

In the bedrooms, the vintage decoration style can bring romanticism, relaxation and a lot of personality.

Wrought iron or wooden headboards in vintage bedrooms

A restored antique headboard becomes the focal point of the bedroom. You can complement it with mismatched but harmonious bedside tables.

Traditional bed linen to reinforce the vintage style decor

Crocheted bedspreads, lace cushions or floral quilts add a special warmth. Don't be afraid to mix textures.

Soft, enveloping lighting in vintage style

Opt for table lamps with fabric shades, indirect lighting or even decorative candles. Lighting is key to accentuate that cosy atmosphere so characteristic of vintage.

Bathrooms and hallways with vintage style decoration

Whether in small spaces or in walk-through areas, vintage style has a lot to offer.

Washbasins on top of antique furniture in vintage style bathrooms

Transforming a sideboard into a washbasin is one of the most effective ways to bring vintage into the bathroom. Combine it with gilded mirrors or antique-style taps.

Coat racks and mirrors in a vintage-style hallway

An oval mirror, a console table with worn drawers or a wrought-iron coat rack can bring the entrance hall to life. These are details that welcome you in style.

How to achieve a vintage style décor without going overboard

Apply the vintage decoration style Tasteful design requires balance. It is not about recreating a museum, but about evoking the past without renouncing the present.

Practical tips for a harmonious vintage

Choose a base colour palette: broken whites, powdered tones, soft greys.
It incorporates only a few key piecesAn antique chest of drawers, a retro lamp, a mirror with a gilded frame.
Combine with neutral elementsThe modern furniture, smooth floors or white walls will help to balance.

Avoid these vintage style decorating mistakes

Saturate with too many patterns or textures.
Mixing too many eras without coherence.
Using old furniture in poor condition without restoration.

Harmony is key. A well-designed vintage space conveys peace, history and style without looking cluttered or overloaded.

A bit more than a year ago, we bought a house in Spain dating back to 1998 and decided to completely renovate it. We were looking for an interior designer who could understand our ideas, develop a concept for the renovation and interior, and also coordinate the entire project, including the selection and purchase of furniture.
After two disappointing experiences with other interior designers, a colleague recommended Cristina from Tarraula in Jávea. And what a lucky recommendation that turned out to be!

From our very first meeting, we immediately felt that Cristina understood us and what we were looking for. She listened carefully to our ideas, made fantastic suggestions and had a wonderful sense of how to create the atmosphere and style we had in mind. We loved her ideas for both the renovation and the furniture, and very quickly felt confident enough to entrust her with the entire project.

Four months later, we returned to Spain and were absolutely blown away.

Wow – what a transformation!

Our house had been completely renovated and turned into a beautiful, warm and stylish Spanish home. The furniture was carefully selected, the workmanship was excellent, and every detail came together perfectly.
Cristina and her colleague did a fantastic job coordinating and supervising the entire renovation. The craftsmen were excellent, everything was handled professionally, and the quality of the work was truly outstanding.
But what matters most to us is how we feel about the result: we absolutely love our home! It now has exactly the style and atmosphere we had hoped for – and honestly, we cannot imagine having done it any better.

Looking back, we can say with complete confidence that the investment was absolutely worth it.
We are incredibly happy that we found Cristina and would wholeheartedly recommend her and the entire Tarraula team to anyone looking for creativity, professionalism, quality and someone who genuinely cares about creating a home that reflects the people who live in it.

Thank you so much, Cristina, for turning our house into the home we dreamed of! ❤️
