Rustic or country style interior decoration

In the world of interior design, one of the styles that never goes out of fashion is the rustic or country style. This style, characterised by its connection with nature and its use of fine materials, has become an increasingly popular choice for those looking to create a warm and welcoming home. But how do we manage to bring that country essence inside our homes? Today we will explore the main keys to country style interior decoration, and how we can help you transform your home into a unique and charming space.

What is rustic or country style interior decoration?

When we talk about rustic style interior decoration, we are referring to a design that seeks to recreate the calm and relaxed atmosphere of a country house. It is a style inspired by simplicity and the natural beauty of materials. Textures are the protagonists in this type of decoration: aged wood, stone, wrought iron and natural fibres such as linen or cotton, create an environment where country-style interior decoration becomes the common thread in every corner.

This style invites us to enjoy life without rushing, connecting with the essential and rescuing the authentic. Rustic takes us back to basics, but without losing sight of functionality and comfort, which is what makes this style so appealing to so many of us.

Keys to rustic or country style decoration

To achieve a country-style interior design that reflects that warm and cosy atmosphere, it is important to follow some fundamental guidelines:

Natural materials and neutral colours

One of the main elements of rustic decoration is the use of natural materials. Wood, in its purest form, untreated or with aged finishes, is the star material. It can be found not only in robust furniture with character, but also in architectural details such as ceiling beams or floors.

The predominant colours in this style are neutrals and earth tones: beige, brown, grey and off-white, which help to create a serene and peaceful atmosphere. These colours can be combined with touches of olive green, navy blue or mustard to provide contrast without losing the natural essence of country style.

Textiles in rustic or country design

Textiles in country-style interior decoration play a crucial role. The use of wool blankets, linen curtains, jute rugs and cotton cushions add layers of warmth and comfort to the space. For those looking for a more contemporary feel, the rustic-modern style allows for the inclusion of understated prints such as checks or stripes in muted tones.

Robust, handcrafted furniture

Rustic furniture is a key piece to achieve an authentic interior decoration in this style. It is characterised by being robust, with simple lines and made from natural materials such as solid wood. Furniture often has a distressed finish or even natural markings that emphasise its handcrafted character. Large dining tables, high-backed wooden chairs and vintage-style cupboards are essential elements that add personality and presence to the space.

The handcrafted touch also extends to the decorative details, such as wrought iron lamps, traditional ceramics or wicker baskets. These elements give a rustic feel without losing functionality, creating a perfect balance between aesthetics and practicality.

Warm and natural lighting

Lighting in rustic decoration plays a fundamental role in creating cosy atmospheres. To achieve this, it is advisable to use warm light, which imitates natural light and provides a sense of comfort in the home. Hanging lamps made of aged metal or floor lamps with fabric shades are excellent options for this type of space. In addition, making the most of natural light is essential: light curtains in light tones allow light to enter softly, without detracting from privacy.

If you want to add a more romantic and nostalgic touch, you can incorporate candles or country-style lanterns, which not only serve the function of illumination, but also add a very personal decorative note.

A bit more than a year ago, we bought a house in Spain dating back to 1998 and decided to completely renovate it. We were looking for an interior designer who could understand our ideas, develop a concept for the renovation and interior, and also coordinate the entire project, including the selection and purchase of furniture.
After two disappointing experiences with other interior designers, a colleague recommended Cristina from Tarraula in Jávea. And what a lucky recommendation that turned out to be!

From our very first meeting, we immediately felt that Cristina understood us and what we were looking for. She listened carefully to our ideas, made fantastic suggestions and had a wonderful sense of how to create the atmosphere and style we had in mind. We loved her ideas for both the renovation and the furniture, and very quickly felt confident enough to entrust her with the entire project.

Four months later, we returned to Spain and were absolutely blown away.

Wow – what a transformation!

Our house had been completely renovated and turned into a beautiful, warm and stylish Spanish home. The furniture was carefully selected, the workmanship was excellent, and every detail came together perfectly.
Cristina and her colleague did a fantastic job coordinating and supervising the entire renovation. The craftsmen were excellent, everything was handled professionally, and the quality of the work was truly outstanding.
But what matters most to us is how we feel about the result: we absolutely love our home! It now has exactly the style and atmosphere we had hoped for – and honestly, we cannot imagine having done it any better.

Looking back, we can say with complete confidence that the investment was absolutely worth it.
We are incredibly happy that we found Cristina and would wholeheartedly recommend her and the entire Tarraula team to anyone looking for creativity, professionalism, quality and someone who genuinely cares about creating a home that reflects the people who live in it.

Thank you so much, Cristina, for turning our house into the home we dreamed of! ❤️
